2022 Gathering: Northumbrian Pipes Taster Day
April 22 @ 10:30 AM - 4:30 PM£24
How To Play the Northumbrian Small Pipes: A Taster Day for Absolute Beginners (Ages 15+/adult)
Pipes are provided for every participant; there are four sessions in the day with refreshment breaks in between. Participants should bring a music stand if they have one, their own refreshments, a pencil and be advised to wear loose comfortable clothing.
The maximum number of participants in the museum Seminar Room will be 10, with hygiene rules in place regarding handling individual sets of pipes. Distancing and mask wearing are acceptable and up to personal choice.
Devised by player and tutor, Ednie Wilson MA, and supported by Side By Side Arts, Gateshead, the session follows a tutorial provided for each participant, which helps to set achievable goals and assess progression. The tutor is there to make it fun. Ednie says: “As a player and tutor, I have never forgotten the experience of learning how to play the Northumbrian Small Pipes and how much I wanted to do it. From taming the parts, to learning the tricky part of every new tune. The sound still makes me smile and the joy of making music has never left me. These workshops offer an introductory opportunity to experience the pipes in a supported learning environment. Thanks to pipe maker, Dave Shaw, I have a set of identical, student (simple) pipes designed for absolute beginners either to music of any kind or for musicians who are new to playing the pipes.”
Bookings must be made in advance to firstname.lastname@example.org (tel. 01670 513308) – with details for paying the fee of £24 provided on application.
