The life and ingenuity of the noted engineer, John Urpeth Rastrick who was born in Buller’s Green in Morpeth.

John Urpeth Rastrick was a famous and ingenious engineer who was a friend of the Stephenson family of steam locomotive fame. Rastrick was one of the judges at the famous Rainhill Trials of 1829, a competition to test types of locomotive power. This was won by Robert Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’, travelling at speeds of 30 mph.

John Urpeth’s father, John Rastrick, was himself an equally famous inventor who features in the film ‘The Daily Grind for our Bread and Butter’ available on the same channel.
